Following our previous look at an opening for a Senior Architect at Robson Forensic, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for an Architect/Designer at To Be Done Studio.
The role, based in Washakie, WY with the possibility of a remote arrangement, calls for an individual to join To Be Done Studio on a contract basis to work on the Eastern Shoshone Cultural Hub project. Eastern Shoshone or Shoshone heritage is strongly preferred for the role, as is a professional degree or significant experience in architecture, and proficiency in Archicad, Revit, AutoCAD, Rhino, and Adobe Creative Suite.
The open role at To Be Done Studio offers us the opportunity to explore the story behind the Eastern Shoshone Cultural Hub project. The cultural center, developed by the Eastern Shoshone Tribe in Fort Washakie, aims to preserve Tribal archives, artifacts, and records currently managed by the Tribal Historic Preservation Office.
The proposed facility will serve as a centralized space for cultural programming and historical preservation, reflecting the Tribe’s connection to its ancestral lands. Since July 2023, To Be Done Studio, with support from the Citizens’ Institute on Rural Design (CIRD), has led a 14-month collaborative design process, partnering with MASS Design Group to conduct both in-person and virtual engagement sessions with the Eastern Shoshone Tribal Business Council, Cultural Center staff, and local community members.
The efforts produced a design strategy prioritizing cultural continuity, language preservation, and Tribal stewardship of historical materials. Central to the project is the creation of a new center to replace the existing Tribal Cultural Center, which is currently housed within a local school and lacks adequate space and accessibility. Tribal records and artifacts are dispersed across multiple locations, creating barriers to access and research.
Throughout the design process, the team utilized workshops, visual preference surveys, site visits, and shared meals to gather feedback. Two central themes emerged: “Building as Medicine,” symbolizing healing and cultural resilience; and “Building as Connector,” emphasizing intergenerational knowledge-sharing and community cohesion.
Following the CIRD program, the Tribe has refined site selection and expanded community outreach. With funding from the National Endowment for the Arts’ Our Town grant and the Mellon Foundation, the project has progressed toward implementation. To Be Done Studio is currently producing a physical design model to inform the next development phase.
