Turning gestures into speech, text
A mobile application is being developed in the country to translate gestures into speech or text, which would help persons with disabilities communicate more effectively, said experts at a workshop yesterday.
With the support of artificial intelligence, the software will decode sign language, facial expressions and then translate those into text or speech in Bangla, they added.
The workshop was organised by Bangladesh Computer Council and ICT division held at Software Technology Park in Dhaka's Karwan Bazar.
This initiative is a project of “Enhancement of Bangla Language in ICT (EBLICT) through research and development” under the ICT division and supervised by Bangladesh Computer Council (BCC).
Persons with speech disorder or visual or hearing impairment often face challenges while seeking treatment or legal help.
The new app would help them express thoughts in a better way, said participants at the workshop.
Mamun-or-Rashid, language technology specialist at EBLICT, said the app would be available by 2019.
Speaking as chief guest, Telecom and ICT Minister Mustafa Jabbar said incorporating ideas from various sources can make the app more effective and user-friendly.
Its success will be a significant achievement, he added.
