The Amateur (2025)

Directed by James Hawes, The Amateur is a 2025 vigilante action spy film based on Robert Littell’s 1981 novel. The story follows Charlie Heller, portrayed by Rami Malek, a CIA cryptographer whose wife is killed in a terrorist attack in London. Frustrated by the agency’s inaction, Heller forces his superiors to train him as a field operative, launching a personal mission to track down her killers.
The film features a star-studded cast including Rachel Brosnahan, Laurence Fishburne, and Caitríona Balfe. Despite its ensemble, The Amateur received mixed reviews: IndieWire’s David Ehrlich called it “an aggressively competent spy thriller,” while Variety’s Owen Gleiberman noted it’s “never less than watchable,” but full of “pulp stuffed into its blender.”
