An American expat living in the Netherlands has expressed her astonishment at discovering the disparity in sizes of common fizzy drinks when compared to her home country.
It's no secret that Europe and the USA often draw comparisons, with many still finding themselves surprised by the differences between these two regions of the world.
A particular point of amazement is the stark contrast in portion sizes for food and beverages. Many social media users have embarked on a mission to expose how significantly the sizes of meals and drinks can vary across global outlets of fast-food giants like McDonald's.
However, the variations in everyday supermarket items also catch people off guard. This was the case for the American Lily, who shared her observations on TikTok in a video that quickly went viral, racking up over 4.9 million views in merely five days.
Since relocating from the USA to the Netherlands, Lily has been documenting the cultural shocks she's faced, including the European sizing of soda bottles.
In a lighthearted TikTok video, Lily questioned, "Can someone please explain why all soda cans in Europe are so tiny?" She began by showcasing a selection of 330ml cans of popular soft drinks such as Coca-Cola and Fanta, which typically come in packs of six or 12.
With a puzzled tone, she speculated, "Maybe these soda cans are for children?" before turning her attention to the larger bottles.
"And where can I find the gallon of soda you can buy in every American supermarket?" she queried in her video, while showcasing the typical one or one and a half litre bottles of beverages.
"Are these really the biggest bottles of soda in Europe?" she questioned while displaying 1.5 litre bottle of Fanta and Coca Cola. "This is insane!".
Quickly, people flocked to the comment section to share their knowledge on fizzy drink sizes, with one viewer clarifying: "Biggest bottles are like 2l", to which Lily responded: "Which is very tiny don't you think?".
A second viewer elucidated: "They are standard size, since Europeans aren't a very big fan of sodas, they prefer sparkling water, juice, water and some other things, and kids mostly drink them."
A third viewer expressed in shock: "I saw that the American soda can is 500ml". To this, another person exclaimed: "WHAT THATS A NORMAL BOTTLE SIZE IN ENGLAND."
Other viewers also expressed their astonishment after researching the common American sizes of fizzy drink bottles, which can be up to three litres large.
One person penned in shock: "I got diabetes just from SEARCHING American soda."
While another quipped: "My phone got type 2 diabetes as soon as I even wrote 'American soda can size' in Google."
