If you’re an iPhone owner who wants to be able to use WhatsApp as the default messaging and calling app, you’re in luck. The latest WhatsApp update adds support for exactly that.
As reported by WABetaInfo WhatsApp version 25.8.74 adds support for choosing a default Messaging or Calling app in the Settings app.
This is the first time that WhatsApp has hooked into the feature that Apple started to offer when it launched iOS 18.2.
The option to choose a default app for calling and messaging was originally set to be limited to iPhones in the European Union, but Apple later confirmed that it would roll the same feature out to everyone globally as well. Keep in mind that you do need to be running the latest version of WhatsApp for this to work.
You can change your default calling and texting app by heading to your settings, selecting Apps > Default Apps. From there, select the Messaging and Calling options, and you’ll see a list of alternative apps you can choose from, which now includes WhatsApp if you upgrade to the latest version.
Along with default calling and messaging apps, iPhone owners can also select a default web browser, email app, and call filtering app. Other default apps that can be configured include contactless payments, password management, and translation app.
