To the Lone Star State: Corporate migration to Texas takes off

Texas has cemented itself as a challenger to Wall Street.

An increasing number of companies are moving their headquarters to Texas, drawn by lower taxes, business-friendly regulations and a growing talent pool.

The moves are expected to reshape the state’s economic profile and strengthen its national influence. Texas is set for further gains with the planned launch of the Texas Stock Exchange, a new challenger to Wall Street aiming to attract companies looking for alternative listing venues.

Meanwhile, Intercontinental Exchange, parent of the New York Stock Exchange, and Nasdaq have announced plans in recent months to expand their presence in the state.

Yum! Brands, 2025: The company said it will move KFC U.S. corporate office employees from Louisville, Ky., to the KFC and Pizza Hut Global headquarters in Plano.

X, 2024: Owner and executive chairman Elon Musk said he is moving the social media platform’s headquarters to Austin from California.

SpaceX, 2024: Musk announced the move of headquarters for his rocket company to Boca Chica from California. He switched SpaceX’s incorporation from Delaware to Texas in February 2024.

Chevron, 2024: The oil giant announced plans to move its headquarters from San Ramon, Calif. to Houston. The company has been bitterly contesting state regulations on its oil-producing and refining operations in California.

Frontier Communications, 2023: The telecommunications company announced plans to move its headquarters from Norwalk, Conn., to Dallas. In September, Verizon announced plans to buy Frontier for $9.6 billion.

Fisher, 2023: The investment manage moved its investments headquarters from Camas, Wash. to Plano.

Caterpillar, 2022: The heavy machinery manufacturer announced it would move its headquarters from Deerfield, Ill. to its existing office in Irving.

Tesla, 2021: Musk moved the EV maker’s headquarters from California to Austin.

AECOM, 2021: The infrastructure consulting firm moved its headquarters from Los Angeles to Dallas.

Charles Schwab, 2021: The brokerage moved its headquarters from San Francisco to its new campus in Westlake.

Oracle Corp., 2020: The business software maker announced plans to move its corporate headquarters to Austin from Redwood City, Calif. Chairman Larry Ellison said last April that Oracle was moving its world headquarters to Nashville.

Hewlett Packard, 2020: The tech company moved its enterprise headquarters from Silicon Valley to Texas.
