Somewhere they can have people to talk to that went through similar things.

Sierra Brunner*

What would you like to accomplish with the Student Senate? The thing I would like accomplish as a Student Senator is to bring awareness to the invisible mental health issues that plague so many students. I also want to try and get a safe space for women and men that are victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse. There should be a space for those that need that time alone or to talk to someone and get some help.

Matthew Henning
Academic program: Business management
Senate positions running for: General Senator, VP Administration and Finance, VP Legislative Affairs, VP Team Development, VP Public Relations and President
Involvement: This is technically my first semester at Madison Area Technical College, therefore I haven’t had the opportunity to join any activities or organizations. However, I have a variety of skills that I believe my peers and the school as a whole can benefit from.
What qualities and skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for Senate? I have a business mind. With both of my parents owning businesses I have learned so many valuable skills. Watching them problem solve and lead by example is undoubtedly the most important thing I have learned. Therefore, the most notable skill I have obtained is the ability to lead. Leading is the key to success in any field. I have a lot of interest in entrepreneurship because there is no better opportunity to compete with my peers. I have knowledge and experience in public speaking and influencing people. I am inspired to be a potential politician after a decade or so of business experience. Overall, leading a group of devoted individuals is one thing that I have wanted to do as long as I can remember. Others would describe me as ambitious. I do not settle unless I am absolutely satisfied. However, I find it very hard to be satisfied in a world of potential. If people have a question sometimes they will come to me, but I will give them a straightforward answer. I talk the way I think; sugarcoating is the worst thing when giving advice. If you sugarcoat things it then makes it not advice anymore, you just give them an obvious recommendation that they would have been better off not hearing. I think that this makes me quite different from most people. Our generation conforms to society, they don’t think freely. I think people see a difference in me and a few words that they would say are: inspirational, spiritual, awakened, honest and unsettled.
What would you like to accomplish with the Student Senate? There are quite a few things that I would have interest in accomplishing. Firstly I think that I would attempt to make new programs that would help bring the community together. I would do this because I believe that Madison Area Technical College is more than just a college. It’s a place where all students and staff should feel their voice is heard. The only way to inspire change is to inspire the people in the community to reach out and make their opinion heard. This would be beyond beneficial for not only the college but the community. Secondly, I would like the opportunity to help people in need. It’s easier to turn your back than it is to reach out a helping hand. Helping is easy, I think that more reaching out has to happen within our college and community. I think that this task could be quite simple and accomplished quickly. Overall, my goals as a part in the Student Senate at Madison Area Technical College are the following: inspire change, make all voices heard, reach out to people in need, promote student success, introduce activities that bring the college and community together and lastly create an environment that is safe and enjoyable for all.

What qualities and skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for Senate? I am a creative, out of the box thinker. I take pride in finding efficient, doable solutions to complex problems that take everyone’s needs and wants into account. I’m also proficient in written communication, both for marketing and more general purposes.
What would you like to accomplish with the Student Senate? I would like to focus on some of the problems affecting the student body that have not been addressed. For instance, there is currently no allergen list for hot food in the cafeteria. This affects all students with dietary restrictions. During this term, I would like to get the ball rolling and figure out what steps to take to get that changed. Additionally, I would like to help get the word out in fun, memorable ways about the software switchover happening in a few years. Increased student awareness is essential for the switch to go successfully, as is the student body having a chance for their desires to be heard so they can have a voice in the matter. Cameron Wilkin
Academic program: Liberal arts transfer – arts and humanities
Senate position running for: General Senator
Involvement: When I attended Northern State University in Aberdeen, South Dakota, I participated in the intramural basketball league. Some skills from Iball that can carry over to a Senate role include being tactical and making the correct decision in a timely manner. Another skill I list is the idea of rallying multiple people together to achieve a common goal, a skill undervalued in my eyes.
What qualities and skills do you possess that would make you a good candidate for Senate? One of the strengths of my personality is I am a “people person,” and that people tend to gravitate towards me like magnets. This is a great skill to have when it comes to working together as a team. I am a student of philosophy who has been taught to question the answer, rather than to answer the question, and I believe that to be an invaluable aspect of governance. I believe it is in my best interest to be on the Student Senate at Madison College, while arguing that it is also in the college’s best interest to have a talented, passionate, hard working, driven and intelligent individual on their team. I am an eloquent speaker and am not shy to the spotlight, making me a great candidate for this role.
What would you like to accomplish with the Student Senate? When thinking about some things I would like to accomplish in my time as a Student Senator, I would like to represent the student body, as well as give a voice to the student that might not be heard. I think about building a resume that will suffice for a transfer to UW-Madison. I have a dream to attend law school and ultimately practice law in the future. With a role in the Student Senate it will help to gain experience into what governance is like as well as create ties to the community that open doors for myself and like-minded individuals. I believe working to provide a safer and cheaper education is of value for everyone involved.
