Internet outage hits banks, streaming sites and PlayStation Network

A mass internet outage has taken streaming sites, banks and even the PlayStation Network offline.

The mystery internet outage has impacted a number of online services from about 5pm GMT.

Down Detector, an online outage tracker, logged thousands of reports in minutes at around that time.

It seems to be mostly impacting UK and US sites.

The PlayStation Network - the service lets PS4 and PS5 owners use to play online - is one of the most high profile outages, with tens of users complaining online.

The outage means players are unable to log in and play their games.

UK bank websites are have also been impacted - including HSBC, Halifax, Barclays, TSB, Tesco Bank, Lloyds Bank, and the Bank of Scotland.

In America, USBank, American Express and CapitalOne are down.

Certain retailers - including John Lewis and Argos - seem to also have been down at some points on Thursday evening.

Some reports suggest Amazon Web Services, or a Content Delivery Network (CDN), may have failed causing the output.

However, Amazon has denied Web Services is linked to the outage.
