Insurance giant Cigna Corp. has acquired Brighter Inc., a digital health technology company based in Santa Monica, for an undisclosed sum.

The Connecticut-based global health service company on Thursday announced the deal it says will accelerate and expand its consumer initiatives and provider partnerships. A spokesman declined to discuss terms of the sale.

Brighter, founded in 2010, works with health service and dental groups to engage patients and health care providers on mobile and desktop software platforms.

The company, which had worked with Cigna since 2015, will continue to serve its health tech clients as well as become the “digital health engine” for the insurer.

Cigna Chief Executive David M. Corani said the acquisition would establish the firm as “the leader in the digital transformation of our industry.”

Brighter, which has more than 100 employees, was founded by Jake Winebaume and Jason Szczuka and had been backed by DAG Ventures, the Mayfield Fund, Benchmark, Tenaya Capital, and General Catalyst Partners.
